“How does one capture the immaterial, the ethereal and the beautifully frail? How does one explore a concept as soft-spoken and quiet as silence? This is what my creator, Manuel Kirsch, has tried to achieve. By adopting a monochrome and abstract aesthetic, he has produced me – a gigantic sheet of toilet paper adorned with butterfly motifs with the satisfying texture of velour made possible by screen printing and gesso on canvas. Perhaps due to my material, I illustrate that sublime moments of silence are not only found in the countryside, but also at home in the washroom. Yet please don’t look at me with sombre gravity. After all, how serious can one be about a talking sheet of toilet paper?
My name is Schmetterlinge (Butterflies in German) and I am a creation by Manual Kirsch.”
